Krishna Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. It is one of the major Hindu festivals. We celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, who is believed to be the eighth incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu. This festival is one of the most important religious events in Hinduism.
Significance of Krishna Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of Krishna, revered as the divine protector, the giver of knowledge, and the destroyer of evil. According to Hindu mythology, Krishna was born in a prison in Mathura at midnight on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September). His birth is considered to be a pivotal moment in the epic Mahabharata, where Krishna played a crucial role in guiding the Pandavas and delivering the Bhagavad Gita’s teachings.
How Krishna Janmashtami is Celebrated
- Fasting and Pooja: Devotees observe fasting throughout the day, breaking it only after the midnight hour, the time believed to be Krishna’s birth. Temples and homes are decorated, and special poojas (prayers) are conducted. The idol or image of baby Krishna (known as Bal Gopal) is placed in a cradle and worshipped with great devotion.
- Dahi Handi: In Maharashtra and other parts of India, the festival is famous for the “Dahi Handi” event, which reenacts Krishna’s childhood act of stealing butter. A pot filled with yoghurt or butter is hung high up, and groups of young men form human pyramids to reach and break the pot.
- Bhajans and Kirtans: Devotees sing devotional songs and hymns in praise of Krishna. These bhajans and kirtans are often accompanied by traditional dance forms like Raas Leela, which depict episodes from Krishna’s life, especially his playful and loving relationship with the gopis (milkmaids) of Vrindavan.
- Temple Celebrations: Temples dedicated to Krishna, such as the Dwarkadhish Temple in Gujarat, the Krishna Janmasthan Temple in Mathura, and the ISKCON temples worldwide, become the centres of grand celebrations. These temples are beautifully decorated, and elaborate rituals are performed.
- Cultural Performances: In many places, dramatic enactments of Krishna’s life, known as Rasa Lila or Krishna Lila, are performed. These performances, especially popular in Mathura and Vrindavan, bring to life the various episodes from Krishna’s childhood and youth.
Spiritual Importance
Janmashtami is not just a celebration of Krishna’s birth but also a time for introspection and devotion. It is believed that by fasting, chanting, and worshipping on this day, devotees can purify their minds and souls, receiving Krishna’s blessings for a righteous life. The festival also underscores the victory of good over evil, as Krishna’s life and teachings continue to inspire moral integrity, compassion, and devotion.

Janmashtami Prasad Recipes
Janmashtami Prasad’s recipes include delectable treats like sweet and savoury offerings. Popular choices are Mathura Peda, made from milk powder and ghee, and Kheer, a creamy rice pudding flavoured with cardamom and nuts. These traditional sweets are prepared to celebrate Lord Krishna’s birth with devotion and joy.
These prasad (offerings) are typically made without onions and garlic, and they are usually sweet or dairy-based, reflecting Krishna’s love for milk, butter, and sweets. Here are some popular and traditional recipes:
Panchamrit
- Ingredients: 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup yoghurt, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon ghee, 1 tablespoon sugar, and tulsi leaves.
- Method: Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Garnish with tulsi leaves. Panchamrit is a sacred offering and is often distributed as prasad after the puja.
Gopalkala
- Ingredients: 1 cup poha (flattened rice), 1/2 cup yoghurt, 1 tablespoon ghee, 1/4 cup grated cucumber, 1/4 cup chopped bananas, 1/4 cup pomegranate seeds, salt, a few curries leaves.
- Method: Wash and drain the poha. Mix it with yoghurt, grated cucumber, coconut, and fruits. Heat ghee and add curry leaves. Pour this tempering over the poha mixture. Serve this as a savoury offering.
Makhan Mishri
- Ingredients: 1 cup fresh white butter (makhan), 2 tablespoons mishri (rock sugar), and a few tulsi leaves.
- Method: Mix the fresh butter with mishri and serve it as a simple yet traditional offering to Lord Krishna.
