Peanut Chutney Recipe

Peanut chutney is a quick, versatile, and flavorful condiment made with roasted peanuts, garlic, chilies, and tamarind. Perfect for South Indian breakfasts or snacks, it’s a creamy, tangy, and nutritious addition to your meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup peanuts
  • 3-4 dry red chilies adjust to taste
  • 6-8 garlic cloves
  • 1 inch ginger chopped
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp tamarind pulp
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed for consistency
  • Tempering Optional:
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida hing
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 2 red chillies
  • 5-6 curry leaves

Instructions

  • I pan-roast the peanuts on medium heat until golden brown. Let them cool.
  • Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan and add the following ingredients:
  • 3-4 dry red chillies
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1-inch ginger piece
  • 6-8 garlic cloves
  • Saute them for 2-3 minutes over medium flame.
  • Now add 1 chopped onion and saute it until golden brown, switch off the flame and keep them aside to cool down.
  • Add roasted spice mix, roasted peanuts with salt and 1 tsp tamarind pulp into the blender jar.
  • Add a little water and blend until smooth. Adjust water for desired consistency.
  • Prepare the Tempering (Optional): Heat oil in a small pan. Add urad dal, chana dal, mustard seeds,red chilli, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Once they crackle, pour the tempering over the chutney.
  • Serve: Transfer the chutney to a bowl and serve fresh with your favourite dishes.

Notes

  • For a tangy twist, replace tamarind with lemon juice.
  • Add grated coconut or green chillies for variations.
  • Store in the refrigerator for 2 days or freeze for longer use.
