If you are buying pre-cut watermelons, choose the pieces with deep red flesh and black or dark brown seeds. Avoid the pieces with white stripes or that have too many white seeds. You need to look for a firm and symmetrical watermelon that is free of cuts, wounds, or dents. The ideal watermelon looks dark green and dull, if the watermelon is shiny, keep it separate. Watermelon should be heavy, according to its size. You can try comparing the melon with another of the same size.
